HEALTHY FOODS COST LESS THAN LESS HEALTHY FOODS

Lawrenceville, NJ (Dr Simone) – Many Americans consume diets that do not meet Federal dietary recommendations ( MARGINAL VITAMIN DEFICIENCIES ).  Some say it is because of cost, but in that study, more expensive foods were used like nuts, and fish instead of chicken to meet federal guidelines (http://bmjopen.bmj.com/content/3/12/e004277.full?sid=820d6e1a-280e-47a6-b8c5-498bfa4657e3%E2%80%8B).

However, a well done United States Department of Agriculture Economic Research Service study (from NHANES) shows that healthy foods cost less than less healthy foods.  The authors used three different price metrics: the price of food energy ($/calorie), the price of edible weight ($/100 edible grams), and the price of an average portion ($/average portion). They also determined the cost of meeting the Federal recommendations for each food group.  For all metrics except the price of food energy, the authors found that healthy foods cost less than less healthy foods (defined for this study as foods that are high in saturated fat, added sugar, and/or sodium, or that contribute little to meeting dietary recommendations) [http://www.ers.usda.gov/publications/eib-economic-information-bulletin/eib96.aspx].

CONCLUSIONS from these four Reports:

(1) Even though you try to eat well, it is virtually impossible to obtain the proper doses of vitamins and minerals from the current foods.  Americans unknowingly eat foods that are Genetically Modified or are sprayed with chemicals, refined, processed, over-cooked, frozen, canned, stored, and trucked around the country. Many of our meats contain the hormones and chemicals that have been fed to animals. All of these foods have been depleted of nutrients to varying degrees. Some methods of cooking can totally destroy nutrients or decrease their concentration, and some nutrients are not stable in heat or boiling water.  As a result, Americans do not or cannot eat a healthful balanced diet.   ( MARGINAL VITAMIN DEFICIENCIES?
