Lawrenceville, NJ (Dr. Simone) – Olive oil may prevent cancer because it contains Oleocanthal, a powerful antioxidant that selectively kills cancer cells within 30 minutes by rupturing lysosomes in the cancer cell (Breslin et al. J Molecular Cellular Oncology. 2015).

Extra Virgin Olive Oil contains the greatest amount of oleocanthal because it is the first pressing of freshly harvested olives without the use of heat or solvents to extract the oil.  Virgin olive oil or products called olive oil undergo filtration and have much less oleocanthal.

In other studies, extra-virgin olive oil consumption reduced cardiovascular disease risk in humans by 39%. For each 10 gram / day increase in extra-virgin olive oil consumption, cardiovascular disease and mortality risk decreased by 10% (BMC medicine. 2014; 12(1) DOI: 10.1186/1741-7015-12-78).  And other studies show enhanced athletic performance.
