Lawrenceville, NJ (Dr Simone) – Research presented at Radiological Society of North America annual meeting in Chicago on December 2 suggests that popular energy drinks may cause serious increases in heart contraction rates within an hour of consumption.  21,000 emergency room visits were related to popular energy drinks and 42% mixed the energy drink with another stimulant such as Adderal or Ritalin.  Symptoms included life-threatening arrhythmias, high blood pressure, seizures, and 18 deaths related to Monster Energy and 5-Hour Energy.

In the study, 18 healthy people – 15 men and three women, average age of 27.5 – had cardiac magnetic resonance imaging before drinking an energy drink containing 32 milligrams/100 milliliters of caffeine and 400 milligrams/100 milliliters of taurine.  One hour after consuming the drinks, all the participants underwent cardiac MRI and found that their hearts had increased contraction rates – indicated by increased peak systolic strain in the heart’s left ventricle.

Coaches should be aware that when there is a significant improvement in an athlete’s performance or time, the athlete might be using these popular energy drinks combined with other harmful stimulants like Adderal or Ritalin.
