Lawrenceville, NJ (Dr Charles Simone) – It would be advantageous to reduce testosterone levels for women who have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and for men who have prostate cancer. Testosterone feeds prostate cancer and worsens symptoms for women with PCOS causing obesity, hirsutism, and irregular, infrequent or lack of ovulation and thus irregular menses and poor fertility.

Chamomile contains phytoestrogen compounds that counteract the effects of testosterone.  It has been used to treat painful menstruation, anxiety, and hay fever.

A study was done on 90 women with PCOS in Iran ages 15 to 45. The women in one group took chamomile capsules containing 370 mg of dried flower three times a day for 12 weeks and the other group took placebo capsules. Chamomile did reduce testosterone levels significantly during the 12 week period.  However, follow-up was not long enough to document clinical changes.  There was no change in the level of triglycerides, cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, or HDL cholesterol.

Spearmint tea and licorice root have also been shown to lower testosterone levels. Our previous Report will list more phytoestrogens
