CANCER PATIENTS ARE GETTING MORE DRUG THAN NECESSARY AND PAYING MORE THAN NECESSARY

Some oncologists and patients are challenging the assumption that FDA-approved cancer-drug doses are always the most effective. For certain patients, smaller doses or shorter treatment periods of drugs like Keytruda and Opdivo may provide similar benefits with fewer side effects and significantly lower costs. RESEARCH IN INDIA HAS EVEN FOUND THAT ONE-TWELFTH OF THE STANDARD NIVOLUMAB DOSE MAY BE EFFECTIVE.

DRUGMAKERS, HOSPITALS, AND PHYSICIANS HAVE FINANCIAL INCENTIVES TO MAINTAIN HIGHER DOSING, while the FDA typically cannot require additional dose studies after approval. Its Project Optimus is designed to improve dosing decisions earlier in drug development, and researchers worldwide are testing lower doses and shorter courses.

ONE ESTIMATE SUGGESTS THE U.S. COULD HAVE SAVED ROUGHLY $31 BILLION IN 2024 BY USING THE LOWEST EFFECTIVE DOSES OF 29 EXPENSIVE CANCER DRUGS.
